On Groubear Farm there is a selection of Silver Grey Dorkings, Red Dorkings and Buff Orpingtons, which are all rare breeds. We also keep Aylesbury and ducks, and fatten geese for Christmas.  Some poultry are kept in large runs for protection, but they predominantly are free range around the farm.

There are approximately seventy birds on Groubear.

Chickens

The Dorking

• The Dorking is a distinctive breed of chicken because they are five toed.
• There are many colour varieties of Dorking, but we choose to keep Silver-Grey and Red Dorking.
• They are a duel purpose breed, equally good at producing good quality meat and eggs.
• A Dorking hen can lay an average of 200 eggs per year. 
• The eggs are white

The Buff Orpington

• The Orpington breed got its name from the village its founder, William Cook lived in.
• It is a duel purpose breed, although many people keep them for showing rather than              for farming.
• The Orpington hen can produce on average 120-130 eggs per year and they are an excellent table bird.
• The eggs are brown in colour.
