Dexter Cattle

Dexter cattle are the smallest native breed of cattle in the British Isles. They are a duel purpose breed producing excellent beef and milk.  They calve easily and make good mothers,  they can be black, red or dun in colour.   The breed is early maturing and beef of excellent quality and flavour, with good marbling, can be produced economically  On Groubear Farm we breed halter trained friendly Dexter cattle.

Beef Shorthorn Cattle

Beef Shorthorn cattle were used in the early part of the 20th Century, primarily as a dual purpose breed, but specialisation for beef and milk led to the beef breeders starting their own section of the herdbook in 1958. They are renown for their good temperament, for being hardy and long lived, they are a native breed of cattle that produce superb beef and strong healthy calves.

The Beef Shorthorn is the ideal breed for the production of a choice high quality beef with its suitability for extensive and organic farming systems and its proven marbling and early finishing abilities.

Greyface Dartmoor Sheep

The Greyface Dartmoor is an attractive, quiet and easily handled, descended from the local breeds, which grazed the low ground in and around Dartmoor, they have immense strength of constitution developed through withstanding the severe winters and exposed conditions, which exist around the Moor.

The Dartmoor fleece is classified as lustre longwool, a medium sized sheep (approx. 60kg), hornless, deep bodied, short legged, with well woolled head and legs. The white face should be mottled or spotted with black or grey with matching feet. The short straight legs are well covered with wool.  Traditionally the long, curly, lustre wool was used for blankets, serge, carpets and cloth. The wool is not coloured.

The ewes are good milkers, capable of rearing twins. A lambing of about 140% can be expected with the heavy milking docile ewes.
